Como ya he dicho en el artículo anterior, vamos a hablar de los últimos años de este asesino, sadomasoquista y canibal. Sobre todo vamos a tratar del asesinato de Grace Budd, una joven de 10 años, y el hecho que delataría a Albert Fish seis años mas tarde.
Tomemos en cuenta que había conseguido pasar desapercibido la mayor parte de su vida, esto sería tanto por su cuidado a la hora de elegir sus victimas y planear el asesinato, como por la negligencia de las autoridades en aquel momento, ya que sus victimas éran en gran parte personas en situación de exclusión social.
En la primavera del año 1928, Albert estaba leyendo la edición de domingo del periodico ¨New York Times¨, cuando un anuncio le llama su atención: ¨Joven de 18 años, buscando trabajo en la ciudad, Edward Budd, 406 West 15th Street¨. Tres días mas tarde Albert se presentaría a dicha dirección, haciéndose pasar por un granjero interesado en contratar al joven Edward. Sus intenciones éran claras, pero algo cambia cuando la madre de Edward abre la puerta y lo invita entrar, ya que descubrió que en la familia también había una niña de 10 años, Grace Budd. Su atención rapidamente cambia hacia la chica y pone en marcha otro plan. Después de ganarse la confianza de la familia y ¨entrevistar¨ a Edward, Albert accede a volver otro dia para concretar la contratación del joven. En su segunda visita, menciona una supuesta fiesta de cumpleaños para su sobrina que se iba celebrar esa misma tarde y que le gustaría mucho invitar a la pequeña Grace. Aunque la invitación fue recibida con cierto rechazo por los padres, Albert les aseguro que la niña iba a pasar una buena tarde junto a otros niños de la misma edad y que él mismo se encargaría de traerla al final del dia, además que iba a llamar para trabajar a Edward en los siguientes días. Poco sabían los padres que aquel granjero encantador era en realidad un peligroso depredador, asi que la pequeña Grace marcha en aquella tarde junto a Albert y jamás será vista por nadie.
El 5 de septiembre del 1930, la policía arresta a Charles Edward Pope como sospechoso del rapto. Pope tenía 66 años de edad y era superintendente de unos apartamentos, se parecía físicamente a Fish y fue acusado por su alienada esposa. Charles pasó 108 días en prisión entre su arresto y juicio verificado el 22 de diciembre de 1930.
Seis años más tarde, la familia Budd recibe una carta que tiene un pequeño símbolo hexagonal con las siglas ¨N.Y.P.C.B.A." que significa "Mutua Privada de Chóferes de Nueva York". La señora Budd éra analfabeta y le pidió a su hijo que la leyera. Aquella carta fue escrita por el mismo Albert Fish describiendo de forma detallada todos los horrores que la pequeña Grace sufrió aquella tarde del 1928. Fish describió que llevó a Grace a una casa alquilada en Westchester, donde la asfixió hasta matarla. Después la cortaría en pedazos con una sierra y se alimentaría de su cuerpo durante una semana, cocinando las partes de diferentes maneras. Gracias a la macabra carta, la policía fue llevada directamente a Albert. Fish no hizo el intento de negar el asesinato de Grace Budd, diciendo que él pretendía ir a la casa para llevarse y asesinar a Edward Budd, el hermano de Grace, pero cambió de idea al verla a ella...
Es curioso ya que él mismo se delató, se especula que la carta fue una forma de Albert para regodearse aún más en el sufrimiento de la familia.
La Carta:
¨O Dear Mrs. Budd. In 1894 a friend of mine shipped as a deck hand on the Steamer Tacoma, Capt. John Davis. They sailed from San Francisco for Hong Kong, China. On arriving there he and two others went ashore and got drunk. When they returned the boat was gone. At that time there was famine in China. Meat of any kind was from $1-3 per pound. So great was the suffering among the very poor that all children under 12 were sold for food in order to keep others from starving. A boy or girl under 14 was not safe in the street. You could go in any shop and ask for steak—chops—or stew meat. Part of the naked body of a boy or girl would be brought out and just what you wanted cut from it. A boy or girl's behind which is the sweetest part of the body and sold as veal cutlet brought the highest price. John staid [sic] there so long he acquired a taste for human flesh. On his return to N.Y. he stole two boys, one 7 and one 11. Took them to his home stripped them naked tied them in a closet. Then burned everything they had on. Several times every day and night he spanked them — tortured them — to make their meat good and tender. First he killed the 11 year old boy, because he had the fattest ass and of course the most meat on it. Every part of his body was cooked and eaten except the head—bones and guts. He was roasted in the oven (all of his ass), boiled, broiled, fried and stewed. The little boy was next, went the same way. At that time, I was living at 409 E 100 St. near—right side. He told me so often how good human flesh was I made up my mind to taste it. On Sunday June the 3, 1928 I called on you at 406 W 15 St. Brought you pot cheese—strawberries. We had lunch. Grace sat in my lap and kissed me. I made up my mind to eat her. On the pretense of taking her to a party. You said yes she could go. I took her to an empty house in Westchester I had already picked out. When we got there, I told her to remain outside. She picked wildflowers. I went upstairs and stripped all my clothes off. I knew if I did not I would get her blood on them. When all was ready I went to the window and called her. Then I hid in a closet until she was in the room. When she saw me all naked she began to cry and tried to run down the stairs. I grabbed her and she said she would tell her mamma. First I stripped her naked. How she did kick — bite and scratch. I choked her to death, then cut her in small pieces so I could take my meat to my rooms. Cook and eat it. How sweet and tender her little ass was roasted in the oven. It took me 9 days to eat her entire body. I did not fuck her tho I could of had I wished. She died a virgin.¨
Albert Fish fue sentenciado a la silla eléctrica el 11 de Marzo del 1935 y finalmente ejecutado el 16 de Enero del 1936.
