Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a severe, extremely contagious viral disease of the livestock that has a significant economic impact. It affects swine, cattle, sheep, goats, and other cloven-hoofed ruminants. Intensively reared animals are more liable to the disease than traditional breeds. It causes high mortality in young animals due to myocarditis or when infected by the disease or even lack of milk. FMD causes fever and blister-like sores on the tongue and lips, in the mouth, on the teats, and also between the hooves. The disease leads to severe production losses, and while the majority of affected animals recover, the disease often leaves them weakened and debilitated. The organism which causes FMD is an aphthovirus of the family Picornaviridae. There are about seven strains (A, O, C, SAT1, SAT2, SAT3, and Asia1), which are endemic in different countries worldwide. Each strain requires a specific vaccine to provide immunity to a vaccinated animal.

COVID-19 scenario analysis:

The coronavirus pandemic has affected the industry negatively. The myth that animals can spread the virus to humans has surged the number of abandoned pets. Furthermore, COVID-19 has deteriorated the supply chain and has caused a shortage of animal health products such as nutritional feed as well as vaccines globally. The animal health industry has been impacted largely as many manufacturers in the animal health industry are experiencing a reduced workforce. Also, stringent government policies such as restrictions on the import and export of raw materials from China are expected to hamper the animal health market.

Healthcare facilities are providing animal-related health products, considering the high demand. This is anticipated to further create a financial strain on the market due to procurement inefficiencies and wasted speeding. Due to the pandemic situation, various hospitals and veterinary clinics are overstocking the products.

New product advancements to flourish the market

In March 2019, AgResults announced that it is going to follow up the success of its ongoing brucellosis vaccine development competition with a project focused on developing a vaccine for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

In December 2019, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a patent application titled “Modified Picornavirus 3C Proteases and Methods Thereof” to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) inventors Dr. John Neilan and Dr. Michael Puckette at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC).  If these names sound familiar, you might have read about another recent breakthrough of theirs related to the detection of African swine fever in pigs.

Surge in investments over R&D to boost the market

In July 2018, Boehringer Ingelheim announced an investment of more than 200 million euros into a new strategic production center for Veterinary Public Health. The company would establish the new site in the French Rhône-Alpes region, which is known as the European “vaccine valley”. With this investment, Boehringer Ingelheim’s Animal Health division will be able to respond to the growing global demand for foot-and-mouth disease and Bluetongue virus control.
